In consultation with the County Librarian and her staff, the FOMCL Board decided that a new teen center in Merced Library would be a fitting and much needed memorial for Mary Hofmann, former middle-school library teacher, FOMCL Board member, and lifelong library advocate. Mary loved working with young people, and she often discussed how important libraries can be in teen
learning and socialization. The new teen center will allow her vision of supporting youth to thrive at the Merced County Library.

The Mary Hofmann Teen Center will be a supportive space where young people can read, work, create, dream, and collaborate. Library staff will try out new teen programs there, and the successful ones can be carried to all branches of the Merced County Library. The Teen Center will offer county youth a resource-rich sanctuary tailored to their needs.

Mary passed away in spring 2021, and that summer the FOMCL Board pledged $25,000 of its reserve funding for the new Mary Hofmann Teen Center on the second floor of Merced Library. The Friends continue to advocate and fundraise for the Teen Center, and numerous other community groups have also pledged generous support.
